Tools to manage challenges

Providing tools to manage the challenges of modernity is one of the values that was and still is at the core of the vision that led to the establishment of LUM.

The LUM University, almost thirty years after its foundation, continues to pursue this vision with unchanged conviction, striving to prepare students to face global challenges and promote their ability to innovate both as individuals and collectively, maintaining a modern and future-oriented perspective.

Since its foundation, LUM University has placed at the core of its actions the pursuit of excellent education for the new generations of Southern youth, harmonized with the highest national and international standards, acting as a driving force for the cultural development of the new executive and productive classes, absolutely essential to promote the economic and social revival of the South.

Today, the primary goal of providing tools to address the challenges of modernity remains unchanged, but it has been strengthened in the face of both the increased level of internationalization in the competitive growth process and the radicalization of the socially discriminating value of individual and collective ability to be proactive actors in the knowledge economy.

The main purposes of LUM University are the dissemination of culture, sciences, and higher education through research and teaching activities, as well as scientific collaboration with Italian and foreign institutions.

The University places the student at the center of its actions, ensuring the right to study, elevate, and spread knowledge in the areas of competence specific to the University. These areas, in particular, relate to business activities, the functioning of the economic-financial system and legal professions, the role of technology in the innovation processes of competitive systems, and the management and governance mechanisms of public administrations and healthcare systems.

The overall contribution of the University to the cultural, scientific, professional, and human development of the student is considered essential for professional action in service of individuals, the community, and the territory where the University is situated.

More than in the past, LUM opens up to the international dynamics of widespread knowledge, skills development, competitive and intelligent specialization of territories. Through a progressive redefinition of its internal functional structure, LUM aims to enhance its role as a leading player in the socio-economic growth of the territory where it is located, acting as a knowledge attractor and developer of new projects. LUM University intends, therefore, to actively participate in the design and implementation of territorial development policies defined according to the logic of “smart territorial specialization.”

In the long term, LUM aims to become a model contemporary University where the three missions that traditionally define the University find functional unity realized. Excellence in education, continuous learning, specialized research, innovative doctrinal development, direct connection with the world of work will be the guiding principles for the University’s operational practices to be a protagonist in the economic and social development of the territory.

LUM will strengthen its internal Community composed of professors, technical-administrative staff, and above all, students. It will look after those currently part of this Community, but will extend the invitation to all those who, over the years, have shared the growth path of the University.

LUM University aspires to be a place of teaching, study, research, encounter, and fruitful academic coexistence among students, professors, and technical-administrative staff, accredited as a national and international reference point in the areas of business activities, functioning of the economic-financial system and legal professions, technology in the innovation processes of competitive systems, as well as management and governance of public administrations and healthcare systems. In this way, it aims to contribute to the well-being of society and individuals through:

  • education that enables addressing present and future challenges through acquired knowledge, respecting human dignity, and sustainable economic development;

  • development of knowledge in the areas of competence, thanks to the interaction among professors from different disciplines, capable of combining a disciplinary vision of their activities based on high specialization in various fields with a transdisciplinary vision, also through the development of integrated structures for university teaching and scientific research.

LUM University intends to embark, within the planned period, on a radical transformation journey that will lead to a progressive expansion of the educational offerings and its competencies. This process of change is characterized by innovation in educational and research models, new rules and practices, a new internal organization, new structures, and a new way of engaging with the national and international context.

LUM will be a Community of knowledge that, through teaching, research, and close interconnection with civil society’s excellences, will definitively open up to the international reality.

The University will look towards the models of “Entrepreneurial University,” gradually aligning both internal organizational systems and relationships with all stakeholders connected to it.

LUM aims to position itself within the “territorial research system,” ensuring the fruitful integration of researchers’ skills, entrepreneurs’ drive, and the programmatic will of Public Administrators. The academic excellences available at the University – engaged daily in teaching and research – will be part of the identity-strengthening force that will allow LUM to excel and, by embracing competitive strategies, gain advantages that will enhance its attractiveness.

Through open and inclusive education, LUM aims to transfer knowledge to the new generations and, through them, to the entire society it operates in. The academic excellences it possesses – engaged daily in teaching and research – will be part of the identity-strengthening force that will allow LUM to excel and, not shying away from competitive strategies, gain advantages that will enhance its attractiveness both locally and internationally.

The University operates in a broadened world, where the identity-building process the Institution fosters goes through a double dynamic process: strong connection to a Territory and its intelligent specialization dynamics on one side; maximum openness to the critical exchange of ideas and practices on a global scale on the other.

The emerging university model, which can play a role in the territorial contexts it aims to operate in, is one that:

  • bases the educational process on the interdisciplinarity of teaching areas and their integration with research practice;

  • centers its actions on the analysis of the territorial contexts in which it operates, engaging with the social and economic “actors” present there;

  • addresses the concept of “sustainability” in the various areas of social, economic, and cultural development;

  • challenges its internal practices, subjecting them to a self-evaluation process aimed at improvement through critical change.

The attractiveness that LUM seeks – and to which it will devote its energies – will gradually delineate over time along two directions: towards the potential student population; but also towards those productive and institutional realities that will want to involve the University in their development and research programs.

An open-to-the-territory LUM can attract more private financial resources by offering them “knowledge” and qualified human resources: a real intellectual capital to be engaged in growth.
