The Mission
The Department of Engineering at LUM University is committed to nurturing students’ talent and promoting excellence in research to prepare them for a successful career in the professional and industrial world. The Department focuses mainly on the areas of management engineering and computer engineering, with particular attention to research areas such as digital transformation processes, the application of new enabling technologies to advanced production processes, transforming business models towards sustainability, energy transition, and developing innovative and entrepreneurial capabilities in organized systems. Its main mission is to educate students and professionals capable of tackling the real-world challenges through the application of theoretical and practical knowledge. Moreover, the Department aims to conduct cutting-edge research that contributes to innovation and technological development by creating and transferring knowledge, technologies, and skills for the competitive growth of the economic-productive ecosystem, with particular attention to the local context.
Educational Offer
The Department’s educational offer includes two bachelor’s degree programs: one in Management Engineering – L9 and one in Computer Engineering for Digital Transition – L8, along with a master’s degree program in Management Engineering – LM31. Additionally, the Engineering Department is involved in a wide range of academic programs for post-graduate training, life-long learning, and professional development. The academic training programs are specifically designed to develop skills in business management, complex organizational systems, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, projects, data analysis, industrial automation, and the industrial environment such as plant management, machinery, manufacturing systems, and energy utilization. Students receive solid theoretical and practical training to prepare them for successful careers in the engineering and computer science sectors as professionals, consultants, managers, and entrepreneurs.
Research
The Department is actively engaged in advanced research activities in various fields of management engineering, computer science, and industrial engineering. The faculty and researchers at the Department conduct research projects, both independently and in collaboration with prestigious national and international universities, on regional, national, and international research projects addressing complex problems and contributing to the development of new technologies, methodologies, and engineering solutions. They also collaborate with local companies, spin-offs, and startups in technology and skills transfer activities through third-party contracts and partnership research projects. Additionally, the Department promotes professional training activities and public engagement for the dissemination of research results and knowledge sharing.
Research areas include, among others, developing innovative capabilities in organizational systems, managing and evaluating digital and sustainable transition processes, developing and applying computer solutions for human-machine interaction and artificial intelligence, designing and implementing new products with innovative materials through advanced production processes, analyzing and enhancing data from a multi-criteria and multi-objective perspective, system modeling and control, continuous improvement of business performance, cybersecurity, managing and optimizing energy systems, managing innovative technology-intensive projects.
Collaborations
The Department actively promotes and values collaborations with industry, service sector companies, research bodies, professional associations, and public administration. Collaboration with private companies and public entities in the area encourages the valorization processes of university know-how and, at the same time, fosters the creation of partnerships that can respond more quickly and effectively to the needs of the region. Through these collaborations, students have the opportunity to actively participate in internships, joint research projects, and partnerships with companies and other involved parties, allowing them to develop and apply skills in real-world contexts and create professional networks to support placement.
Resources
The Department provides students with access to advanced laboratories and highly qualified international faculty. Additionally, it offers academic counseling services, career guidance, and technical support to ensure students’ success during their studies and provide them with adequate foundations to effectively enter the workforce.
